Gaomin Tang earned his Ph.D. in physics at the University of Hong Kong in 2026 under the supervision of Prof. Jian Wang. He then continued as a postdoctoral researcher in Hong Kong with Prof. Jian Wang for one and half years. In 2018, He joined Prof. Jian-Sheng Wang’s group at National University of Singapore, where he began working on near-field thermal radiation. He subsequently worked with Prof. Christoph Bruder at the University of Basel from 2019 to 2022 on quantum transport in superconducting junctions. Following that, he spent six months as a visiting scholar in Prof. C. T. Chan’s group at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. At the end of 2022, he joined the Graduate School of the China Academy of Engineering Physics through the Overseas Young Talent Program, where he established his research group.
Transverse thermophotovoltaics

Transverse thermophotovoltaics has been conceptually proposed as a paradigm distinct from conventional junction-based photovoltaics. The talk will introduce a microscopic formalism of this effect in which a transverse electric current emerges in a two dimensional metal sheet via nonreciprocal surface plasmon polaritons driven by near-field thermal radiation. This theoretical formalism incorporates the electron-photon interaction by integrating electronic transition factor governed by energy-momentum conservation, the photon flux factor encoding the nonreciprocal surface modes, and their directional coupling. Transverse thermophotovoltaics opens new avenues for active nanoscale thermal energy conversion. Furthermore, I will extend this framework to the photonic spin Seebeck effect in a similar setup, demonstrating how Rashba spin-orbit coupling in an electron-doped transition metal dichalcogenide monolayer converts circularly polarized thermal photons into electronic spin to induce a spin current.
