Abstract Josephson parametric amplifiers (JPAs) provide near-quantum-limited amplification of microwave signals using the nonlinearity of Josephson junctions. In this talk, I will review the basic physics of JPAs, starting from resonator-based JPAs and extending to Josephson traveling-wave parametric amplifiers (JTWPAs). The talk will cover how Josephson nonlinearity leads to parametric amplification and introduce the concepts of wave mixing, phase matching, and dispersion engineering relevant to JTWPAs. Finally, some theoretical aspects of gain ripples and two-pump schemes in JTWPAs will be briefly discussed.
