Nguyen Ba An (or just Prof An in accordance with the Vietnamese customs) is a professor of physics at Thang Long Institute of Mathematics and Applied Sciences (TIMAS), Thang Long University in Hanoi, Vietnam. He is also a Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Physics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) in Hanoi, Vietnam. He was a professor of physics at the latter institute from 1975 to 2017. Since 2017 when he retired from the VAST, he has been teaching at the Thang Long Institute of Mathematics. He received his B.Sc. from the Azerbaijan State University, Baku (former USSR) in 1975 and acquired his Ph.D. from the Institute of Physics, Hanoi, Vietnam in 1983.

From 2002 to 2005 he was Professor at School of Computational Sciences, Korea Institute for Advanced Studies (KIAS), Seoul, Korea.
He is working in various fields of quantum information physics and quantum computation as well as other related fields including

His research interests include quantum information/quantum computation, quantum optics (nonclassical phenomena), nonlinear optics (multimode laser dynamics), and condensed matter (electronic & optical properties of organic/inorganic heterostructures).
He has supervised many prominent former students of his, including the PhD theses of Nguyen Trung Dan (1993), Tran Thai Hoa (1997), Vo Tinh (2001), Hyo Seok Yi (2004), Truong Minh Duc (2006), Nguyen Thi Xuan Hoai (2016), Tran Quang Dat (to defend); and the M.Sc. theses of Truong Minh Duc (1999), Ho Ngoc Phien (2007), Cao Thi Bich (2012), Nung Van Don (2014), Le Thanh Dat (to defend).
