MathSymbolica is an add-on package that facilitates symbolic computation in Mathematica. It contains over 1,100 functions for notation, manipulation and evaluation of various mathematical expressions. It has several features for compactness and versatility to handle complex problems that are not directly solvable with the built-in Mathematica kernel functions. This presentation will discuss the key features of the package and its application to obtaining approximate analytical solutions to problems in mathematical physics for which exact solutions are not available. Particularly, we will discuss asymptotic expansion of integrals and sums, and perturbation, boundary-layer and WKB theories for solutions of differential equations.

MathSymbolica&reg;는 Mathematica&reg;에서 기호 계산을 용이하게 하고자 개발된 add-on 패키지이다. 이 패키지에는 다양한 수학적 표현의 표기, 변환 및 계산을 수행하는 1,100개 이상의 함수가 포함되어 있으며 내장된 Mathematica 커널 함수만으로는 직접적으로 해결하기 힘든 복잡한 문제를 처리할 수 있는 컴팩트함과 다양한 기능이 포함되어 있다. 이 발표에서는 패키지의 주요 기능을 소개하고 정확한 솔루션을 구할 수 없는 수리물리학 문제에 대한 해석적인 근사식을 구하는 방법에 대해 논의하고자 한다. 특히 적분과 급수의 점근식과 미분방정석의 해를 구하기 위한 섭동, 경계층 및 WKB 이론에 대해 설명할 것이다.

==About the Speaker==

Youngjoo Chung received his BS degree in physics from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, in 1982 and his PhD in plasma physics from Princeton University in 1989. He was at the Advanced Photon Source of Argonne National Laboratory between 1989 and 1996. He has been at GIST since 1996 and he is currently a full professor since 2001. His research interests include specialty optical fibers and fiber gratings, optical fiber-based devices for communication and sensing, and symbolic computing based on Mathematica. He was awarded Optical Society of Korea (OSK) Haelim Photonics Award in 2016, Wolfram Innovator Award in 2017, and Korean Science and Technology Medal of Honor in 2022. He was the general chair of the 25th International Conference on Optical Fiber Sensors (OFS-25) in 2017 and the president of OSK in 2018. His publications include 110 journal papers and 170 international conference papers.

정영주 교수는 1982년 서울대학교에서 물리학 학사 학위를 취득하고, 1989년 프린스턴 대학교에서 플라즈마 물리학 박사 학위를 취득했습니다. 1989년부터 1996년까지 아르곤 국립 연구소의 Advanced Photon Source (APS)에서 근무했습니다. 1996년 광주과학기술원(GIST)에 부교수로 부임했으며 2001년부터 정교수로 재직하고 있습니다. 연구 관심분야는 특수 광섬유 및 광섬유 격자, 광섬유 기반 통신 및 센서, Mathematica 기반 기호 계산 등입니다. 2016년 한국광학회(OSK) 해림광자공학상, 2017년 Wolfram Innovator Award, 2022년 대한민국 과학기술포장을 수상했으며, 2017년 제25차 광섬유 센서 국제학술회의(OFS-25)의 학회장과 2018년 한국광학회 회장을 역임했습니다. 출판물에는 110편의 저널 논문과 170편의 국제학술회의 논문 등이 있습니다.
