STEM 분야 전반에서 아이디어를 컴퓨팅적으로 표현하는 능력은 수학적으로 표현하는 능력만큼 기초적인 역량이 되었습니다. 그러나 STEM 전공 학부생들이 교과서에서 배운 개념을 컴퓨팅과 글쓰기를 통해 실제 문제에 적용할 수 있는 체계적인 기회는 많지 않습니다. 이 문제는 기존 프로그래밍 교육의 특성에 의해 더욱 심화됩니다. 기존 프로그래밍 교육은 실생활의 현상이나 사물에 대해 컴퓨팅적으로 사고하는 것이 아닌 컴퓨터의 저급 (low-level) 연산을 중심으로 설계되어 있어, 아이디어를 갖는 것과 그것을 창의적으로 탐구하는 것 사이의 간극을 넓힙니다. 본 발표에서는 SUNY Korea의 학생 주도 프로그램인 Wolfram Computational Research Club을 소개합니다. 본 클럽에서 학생들은 한 학기 동안 체계적으로 설계된 프로그램을 통해 독창적인 연구 프로젝트를 수행하며, 최종 결과물로서 컴퓨테이셔널 에세이(computational essay)를 울프람 커뮤니티(Wolfram Community)에 게시합니다. 프로그램은 두 가지 핵심 요소로 구성됩니다. 첫째로, 글과 코드, 그리고 컴퓨터 출력 결과를 결합한 지적 이야기인 컴퓨테이셔널 에세이는 프로그램의 최종 산출물이자 핵심적인 학습 매체의 역할을 합니다. 둘째로, 지도교수의 지도를 받는 4단계 워크샵 구조를 통해, 학생들을 주제 탐색에서 에세이 초고 작성 및 수정을 거쳐 울프람 커뮤니티(Wolfram Community)에 게시까지 안내합니다. 컴퓨테이셔널 에세이(computational essay)에서 코드는 저자가 서술하는 이야기에 부합하는 결과를 반드시 산출해야 하므로, 이를 작성하는 행위 자체가 깊은 이해의 과정이 됩니다. 본 발표에서는 프로그램의 디자인의 근거를 설명하고, 단순한 프로그래밍 언어가 아닌 컴퓨테이셔널 언어(Computational Language)로서의 Wolfram Language의 본질이 이 교육 모델을 가능하게 하는 이유를 논의합니다

Across STEM fields, the ability to formulate ideas computationally has become as essential as the ability to formulate them mathematically. Yet STEM undergraduates accumulate conceptual knowledge with few structured opportunities to apply textbook concepts to real-world problems through computation and writing. This problem is deepened by the nature of conventional programming courses, which are designed around the low-level operations of a computer rather than around thinking computationally about things, widening the gap between having an idea and creatively engaging with it. This talk presents the Wolfram Computational Research Club at SUNY Korea, a student-led initiative in which students conduct original computational research through a semester-long, scaffolded program culminating in publication of computational essays to Wolfram Community. The program integrates two components. First, the computational essay — an intellectual story told through collaboration between a human author and a computer, combining ordinary text, Wolfram Language input, and computational output — which serves both as the program's final deliverable as well as its primary learning medium. Second, a four-phase workshop structure, supported by faculty research group advisors, that guides students from topic discovery, through draft and revision, and to review and publication. Because the code must produce results that fit the narrative, writing a computational essay is itself an act of deep understanding. We describe the program's design rationale and discuss why the Wolfram Language's nature as a computational language, rather than a mere programming language, is what makes this model viable.
