View source for Mathematica in Physics Classes and Student Research at a Science High School (영재고의 물리수업과 학생연구에서 매스매티카 활용)

서울과학고등학교는 학생을 대상으로 Mathematica&reg; 수업을 개설하였으며, 교원학습공동체를 통해 교사들에게도 이를 위한 연수 프로그램을 제공하고 있다. 현재는 물리 수업 중심으로 수업에 활용하고 있으며, 물리학의 핵심 공식과 수식을 시각화하고 이를 시뮬레이션하여 학생들의 물리에 대한 이해를 돕고 있다. 본 발표에서는 서울과학고의 Mathematica&reg; 교육 프로그램의 세부 내용과 수업에서의 활용 사례, 그리고 이를 바탕으로 학생들이 개인 연구에서 어떻게 Mathematica&reg;를 적용하는지에 대한 사례를 중점적으로 다룰 예정이다. 학생 연구 사례로 복잡한 미분 방정식을 활용한 “전향력이 파동 전파에 미치는 영향” 연구와 행렬의 고유치 및 고유벡터 계산을 통한 “위상절연체의 가장자리 상태” 연구를 제시하며, 이 중 위상절연체 연구의 경우, 학생이 직접 연구 과정을 설명하며 Mathematica&reg;의 활용이 어떻게 학생 연구의 깊이와 범위를 넓히는데 기여하는지를 강조하여 소개할 예정이다.

Seoul Science High School has offered a Mathematica course for its students and also offered a training program for teachers in the Physics department. Currently, Mathematica is mainly utilized in physics classes as a powerful tool to help students understand the complicated physical concepts by visualizing and simulating physical equations. In this presentation, I will introduce the current status of the Mathematica class and some examples of its use in the physics classroom at my school. In particular, I will emphasize the expansion potential provided by Mathematica in education by introducing students’ research activities such as “The Effects of Coriolis Force on Wave Propagation," which uses Mathematica to solve the complicated differential equations, and "Edge States of Topological Insulators,” which uses it to solve eigenvalue problems. For the introduction of the research on the topological insulator, the student who conducted the research will explain the process of using Mathematica. This will show how Mathematica can expand the quality and scope of students’ research.

==연사 약력==

<b>도현진</b> 선생님은 2017년 부터 영재학교인 서울과학고등학교에 물리 교사로 재직중입니다. 2002년 포항공대에서 고체물리 이론으로 박사학위를 취득했고, 2008년까지 성균관대학교와 캐나다의 토론토 대학에서 박사후연구원으로 근무했습니다. 2008년부터, 2010년까지, 그리고 2013년부터 2016년까지 연세대학에서 연구교수로 재직하였고, 그 사이 2010년부터 2013년까지 건국대학교 강의교수로 근무하였습니다. 주된 연구 관심사는 고온초전도체와 위상절연체에 관한 특성이며, 이러한 경력을 바탕으로 현재는 서울과학고등학교에서 역학과 통계물리, 고체물리, 다체론 등을 가르치는 것과 더불어 학생들의 연구활동을 지도하고 있습니다. 

<b>Hyeonjin Doh</b> has been a physics teacher at Seoul Science High School, a school dedicated to gifted students, since 2017. He earned his PhD in solid state physics theory from POSTECH in 2002. After completing his doctoral studies, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Sungkyunkwan University and then at the University of Toronto in Canada until 2008. He served as a Research Professor at Yonsei University from 2008 to 2009 and again from 2013 to 2016. Between these periods, he was a Teaching Professor at Konkuk University from 2010 to 2013. His research has primarily focused on high-temperature superconductivity and topological insulators. Currently, at Seoul Science High School, he teaches Classical Physics, Statistical Physics, Solid State Physics, and Many-Particle Physics as well as advising students’ research activities.

<b>이현채</b>는 현재 서울과학고등학교 3학년에 재학중이며, 2023년 물리올림피아드 한국 국가대표로 선발이 되어, 몽고 울란바토르에서 개최한 제23회 아시아 물리올림피아드에서 은메달, 일본 도쿄에서 개최된 제53회 국제 물리올림피아드에서 금메달을 수상하였다. 2022년에는 교내 물리경시대회에서 최고점으로 대상을 받고 한성 노벨 영∙수재 장학생으로 선발되었으며, American Mathematics Competition에서 Honor Roll of Distiction을 수상하였다. 물리에 대한 관심과 열정이 높으며 장래에 물리학자를 희망하는 학생이다.

<b>Hyunchae Lee</b> is currently in his third year at Seoul Science High School. In 2023, he was selected as a representative for the Korean National Team for the Physics Olympiad and won a gold medal at the 53rd International Physics Olympiad held in Tokyo, Japan and a silver medal at the 23rd Asian Physics Olympiad held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. In 2022, he won a Grand prize at school Physics competition, was awarded the Hanseong Nobel Scholarship for gifted students, and achieved the Honor Roll of Distinction in the American Mathematics Competition. He has a high interest and passion for physics, and hope to become a physicist in the future.
